echolsDid you know?  The University of Central Arkansas got about $73 million (about 40% of its operating funds) from us taxpayers in the form of federal and state money to run the college in 2009-2010.

You know it’s more than that this year — the year UCA hosts Damien Echols, the outspoken member of The Memphis Three, as an Artist-in-Residence in the College of Fine Arts and Communication.  Echols will teach a creative writing mini-class for UCA students beginning November 11.

What a great idea!  Echols, who is described both as an “eloquent spokesperson” and a satan worshipper, is one of the three teens convicted of the 1993 murders of three West Memphis boys.

The West Memphis Three reached a deal with prosecutors and entered Alford pleas in 2011, legally asserting their innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict.

The judge accepted their pleas and sentenced them to time served after 18 years and 78 days in prison.

“They say” going to university is really about opening minds and learning how to critically think about the world.  UCA is going out of its way to open students’ minds to some, let’s say, interesting people.

The school calls itself a “community resource.”  If that were true, why wouldn’t UCA spend some of our $73 million giving some equal time to conservative speakers and newsmakers?

Your tax money is at work opening the minds of local students!
