In 1940 Congress proclaimed the third Sunday in May as “I Am An American Day,” a nationwide celebration to honor men and women born in the U.S. who reached voting age and persons of foreign birth who attained citizenship in the past year.

By 1945 more than one million celebrants attended ceremonies in Central Park in which they reaffirmed the privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship.
