Elswick, Steel, Heinritz Exit KARN
UPDATE: Dave Elswick now hosts the “Dave Elswick Show” Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 pm on 96.5FM The Answer, part of the Salem radio network in Little Rock.
LITTLE ROCK – Three longtime radio personalities have exited KARN Newsradio 102.9 following a restructuring of programming on the popular conservative talk radio station. Dave Elswick confirmed via social media Thursday night that his afternoon show has been eliminated from the local lineup, and that morning man Bob Steel and News Director Jack Heinritz were also let go.
Elswick came to the Little Rock market in 2001, originally hosting the 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM timeslot for several years. Following the exit of “Big Dave” Medford in 2007, he moved to the 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM slot, where he became a popular outpost for local political discussions, and local guest interviews. Regular co-hosts included Arkansas Gubernatorial Candidate Curtis Coleman, former Congressional Candidate Princella Smith, and others. Prior to moving to Little Rock, the Indiana native had hosted talk radio shows in Grand Forks, Lexington, and Wichita Falls.
Steel has been a longtime fixture in the Arkansas media, primarily in radio and television news. His early days included being a member of the legendary radio newsroom at KAAY 1090 AM during it’s rock and roll heyday, where he used the alias Michael O’Sullivan. He would later become news director at KARK and KATV television, before taking the reigns of the KARN First News Program in 2008 after the exit of longtime hosts Neal Gladner and Sharon Lee.
Heinritz has been a major market news talent since the 1970′s. having worked at major stations such as KFRC in San Francisco and KRLD in Dallas. He came to KARN and the Arkansas Radio Network in 2007.
Following it’s purchase of ABC Radio Networks, Cumulus Broadcasting began requiring large and medium market stations such as Little Rock to clear national programming. Currently, the networks offer names such as Michael Savage and Mark Levin, They also recently ended syndication of a national talk show hosted by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.
There has been no statement released by Cumulus Broadcasting. The current schedule on KARN Newsradio indicates paid programming between 5:30 AM and 9:00 AM, and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
