Gov-Asa-Hutchinson-Healthcare-SpeechActivists state-wide are stunned that newly elected Governor Asa Hutchinson will not seek repeal, try to limit enrollment, or to end the Private Option now, despite an overwhelmingly clear mandate from voters, who put into office this year the largest GOP majority ever in state history.

Read the entire transcript of Governor Hutchinson’s healthcare policy speech on Talk Business & Politics.

In his healthcare policy speech today at UAMS, Governor Hutchinson says the Private Option should continue throughout 2015 and 2016 – and he will set up a task force to identify (by the end of 2015) “future” reforms ensuring “healthcare services for vulnerable populations currently covered by the Private Option.”

Governor Hutchinson’s speech today quickly vaults the friendly first weeks of the 90th General Session into full political mode and puts a strong spotlight on several state Senators and Representatives who ran on an anti-private-option platform.

Several, including Senator Linda Collins-Smith, today said they would still be inclined to defund or stop the Private Option. She advised activists to “watch for specific language about the repeal or end of the PO in the bill(s) to be filed” as a result of today’s news from the Governor.
