    America as Sanctuary

It seems these days if you are of a certain political persuasion or have certain political beliefs you can flaunt Federal law with no thought to consequences.  Of course we’re talking about liberal Democrats here.  No one else seems to be “connected” enough to get away with it. Why is that?  Well, to start with,... by Jack

    Spirit Homes Defeated

Or is it?  Tonight Conway’s City Council voted 8-0 to cancel contract purchase negotiations for the Spirit Homes property.  Before the vote, the Council took time to inform the audience that a municipal swimming facility “is a real need,” although Spirit Homes is “probably not the right place to put it.” This followed a committee... by OurVoicesAR

Spirit Homes: What are the Numbers?

David & Janet Crow, co-founders of the Faulkner County Tea Party, wrote today’s Letter to the Editor in the Log Cabin about Mayor Tab Townsell’s latest folly — the purchase Spirit Homes for yet another parks facility. The Conway City Council has been asked by the Mayor to purchase the Spirit Homes Building, the size... by OurVoicesAR

Conway Growth: What About Strained Streets?

From Sunday, May 31, Log Cabin Democrat, published with permission of Vivian Hogue, the author     To our city government of Conway: There are many of us who are acquainted with walking through farm fields and having to hop, skip and jump, sometimes unsuccessfully, over “cow patties.”  This could easily translate to trying to... by OurVoicesAR

    Spirit Homes Done Deal

by Jack Sotallaro Another seemingly done deal by the most unresponsive City Council in the state.  In a city with four wards and eight elected council members you’d think someone would hear the strident pleas of their constituents to just say no. One Council person insisted on seeing the engineer’s report before voting.  Laudable but... by OurVoicesAR

Retail Sales Flat-Lined; Conway Builds Shopping Centers?

Retail sales flat-lined in April and sales have risen just 0.9 percent over the past 12 months, says the Associated Press.  Overall, retail sales are still faltering: The economy expanded at a meager annual pace of 0.2 percent during the first three months of the year.  Consumer spending growth fell to just 1.9 percent during... by OurVoicesAR

RITA: “No Taxes” But What About GIF Money?

My friends and I are concerned about a great many details surrounding the proposed RITA project, and we keep being told “there will be no taxes” for RITA.  It’s difficult for us to understand that logic, when RITA proponents in the same sentence also talk about using federal and state grants for funding.  Guess they... by OurVoicesAR

Spirit Homes: The Empire Strikes Back

    — Submitted by a Conway resident The Mayor pulled a fast one at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.  The agenda and subsequent votes for the Spirit Homes project were structured in a peculiar way. But it was a very effective way if your goal is to reduce transparency and ram your project through without regard... by OurVoicesAR

Why Shopping Won’t Save Conway’s Future

With our stuttering economy in mind, a couple of recent news stories easily illustrate the ongoing folly of Conway’s Mayor (and others) who believe shopping centers (and the sales taxes from retail) hold the keys to Conway’s economic future. Just how much real demand is there for more shopping here?  Conway’s new shopping centers need... by OurVoicesAR

Conway’s Mayor is Addicted to Parks

Conway Mayor Tab Townsell’s addiction to parks and immature grasp of city finances are catching up with him and causing legal trouble for the City of Conway. A lawsuit now in front of Circuit Judge Michael Murphy alleges Conway unlawfully used proceeds from a quarter-cent sales tax approved in 2001 for expansion of Conway’s parks... by OurVoicesAR

    Winners & Losers in Conway

A “concerned reader” penned the following verses after reading about Conway’s purchase of Spirit Homes for more recreational facilities, a project Mayor Townsell wants done. The Council and the Mayor, you see, say they’re just like you and me. But we know that that’s just not true; they’re mostly NOT like me and you. Oh... by OurVoicesAR

Questions Without Answers: Who in Conway Will Pay?

A favorite TV comedian does a regular segment called “Questions Without Answers.” With a bow to Michael Loftus, here’s some “Questions Without Answers” for Mayor Townsell and the Conway City Council on this ill-conceived idea of making Spirit Homes into more recreational facilities. ♦  Estimated yearly operating costs for a facility such as Mayor Townsell... by OurVoicesAR

Conway Mayor’s Latest Folly: Spirit Homes

(Submitted by a Faulkner County observer) Last Tuesday night I attended the public meeting outlining the potential community / swim center our Mayor is touting as such a bargain for Conway.  Several odd things things stood out to me: ♦  The Mayor said the property being considered (Spirit Homes across from Walmart on Dave Ward)... by OurVoicesAR
